Abstract:
In this interesting article from ARGIA magazine, Ms. Ane Ablanedo states that it is not possible to understand the current sad situation of the Basque language without placing it in the political context. The situation of political subordination of the Basque nation must be taken into account when it comes to understanding the historical regression of our language and its minorization, which continues today.
Nations that are not sovereign are not guaranteed the survival of their language. That is why, in our “autonomous” nation, the health of our language is so weak.
The author stresses that balanced bilingualism is a chimera: the language of the dominant nation always imposes itself on the language of the subjugated nation. The attitude of the Basque political class that defends bilingualism is regrettable, since it leads inexorably to our assimilation.
