Our association NAZIOGINTZA has launched an initiative in collaboration with the Council of Getaria aimed at having the Basque flag or ikurrina fly on the boats moored in the harbour.
Concerned with absence of Basque flags among most of the boats stationed in the harbour of Getaria —in stark contrast with the ubiquitous, mandatory Spanish flag— and the importance of symbolic landscape, NAZIOGINTZA put forward a comprehensive proposal to the Council of Getaria to buy small Basque flags and distribute them among ship owners.
As a result, the Council of Getaria distributed 80 Basque flags in April 2021 to have them fly in all skiffs, canoes and ships on their mast.
News of the proposal and campaign were mirrored in Artzape, the local magazine of Getaria.
