Abstract:
Journalist Jose Mari Pastor regrets the decision taken by the Basque Culinary Center when choosing their new communications manager. The appointed manager knows Spanish and English, but he doesn’t know any Basque. With this, the Basque Culinary Center suggests there is no need for the Basque language in Euskal Herria (The Basque Nation).
With this decision, the above mentioned institution is looking down on the Basque language. And it is also sending a subliminal message: knowing Basque is not indispensable. It is enough with Spanish and English.
Is it the Basque language or its detractors who are supposed to get protection from the government? What would happen in Catalonia if this had happened there?
